Through partnerships with local and national mainstream media outlets, FERN seeks to tell stories that will have lasting impact.

Grantee Profile

The Food & Environment Reporting Network (FERN) is the first and still the only independent, nonprofit news organization in the U.S. that produces in-depth and investigative journalism in the critically underreported areas of food, agriculture, and environmental health. FERN functions as a full-service news organization and works with experienced reporters to produce impartial, unbiased, fact-based watchdog journalism with the aim of revealing corruption, exploitation, and abuses of power. FERN was established in 2011 and won a 2013 James Beard Award.

About Our Grants

In 2016, the Woodcock Foundation awarded FERN a one-year, $75,000 general operating grant. Through its investigative reporting, FERN adds a critical component of communications to our support of more equitable food systems.  FERN will use the grant to support its goals of increasing the number of stories it produces and expanding further into a variety of media formats.
