TFA aims to end educational inequity—the reality that in our country, where a child is born determines his or her educational outcomes and life prospects.
Teach For America (TFA) is the national corps of outstanding recent college graduates who commit two years to teach in urban and rural public schools and become lifelong leaders in expanding educational opportunity. This year, 6,200 corps members are teaching in over 1,600 schools in 29 regions across the country while more than 14,000 Teach For America alumni continue working from inside and outside the field of education for the fundamental changes necessary to ensure educational excellence and equity.
About Our Grants
The Foundation’s 2008 grant of $50,000, our final grant after six years of investment, supports Teach For America’s continued expansion in New York City, where it has quadrupled its size from 282 corps members in 2003 to more than 1,000 in 2008. These corps members, combined with the 600 alumni who are still teaching and 100 alumni serving as school principals or assistant principals, will impact the lives of 100,000 students during the course of the year. Since 1990, Teach For America has placed over 3,000 corps members in New York City public schools in Harlem, Washington Heights, the Bronx, Brooklyn, and the Lower East Side.
